Still recovering from his daughter’s death, ex-policeman Michael Griffin is contacted by Emma Donald, an ambitious young reporter who seems to have uncovered a sinister plot. Victoria Webber - the lover of prime ministerial hopeful Andrew Sinclair - has been killed in an apparent ‘hit and run’. The police are treating the case as such but Emma has learned that Victoria was on the verge of ending the relationship and going to the press – destroying Sinclair’s marriage and any hope of winning the election.
Initially reluctant to help, Griffin only assists Emma when she reveals she is being followed and that Paul Webber – Victoria’s brother – has disappeared. Griffin first contacts a former police colleague but when this results in surveillance against him, he realises he cannot use established channels.
Meanwhile, Andrew Sinclair meets with wealthy oil magnate – and old friend – Jason Crawford. The election is only weeks away and the polls are looking good but Sinclair is still reeling from Victoria’s death. Crawford persuades him to focus on the election but later meets with South African mercenary Corne Muller - the man who Crawford hired to kill Victoria is now targeting Griffin and Emma.
The determined pair eventually track Paul Webber to Scotland and obtain a copy of Victoria’s SIM card – which contains messages and photos of her and Sinclair. Shortly after the meeting, Paul is killed by Muller and his men, who make his death look like a suicide. Griffin and Emma are ambushed on a remote moor but Griffin turns the tabl
The determined pair eventually track Paul Webber to Scotland and obtain a copy of Victoria’s SIM card – which contains messages and photos of her and Sinclair. Shortly after the meeting, Paul is killed by Muller and his men, who make his death look like a suicide. Griffin and Emma are ambushed on a remote moor but Griffin turns the tables on the mercenaries, outwitting Muller and killing two of his men. He and a traumatised Emma flee to London.
Jason Crawford is beginning to panic. He is in debt to powerful Russian businessman Yuri Nikolaev and hopes that Sinclair’s influence will help secure him a controlling interest in a new Emirati oil field. It is his only hope of paying off Nikolaev and saving his empire and legacy.
Griffin and Emma target Matthew Sharp, Sinclair’s former spin doctor. The two are now estranged but when Griffin and Emma question Sharp, they unwittingly expose themselves. Realising he has an opportunity to regain Sinclair’s trust, Sharp arranges a meeting with him and the two investigators. Griffin and Emma believe the politician is ignorant of Crawford’s plot and hope he can help them. But in fact Sinclair now knows that Crawford had Victoria killed. Determined to win power, he has put all morality aside in order to help Crawford capture the troublesome pair.
Emma and Griffin find themselves at the mercy of Muller, who has been tasked by Crawford with tidying up his mess. When the two refuse to reveal the location of the crucial SIM card, Muller tortures Griffin. All seems lost until a mysterious trio of gunmen arrive, killing Muller and his men.

Griffin and Emma soon find themselves guests of a man known only as “Andrei”. He turns out to be an employee of Yuri Nikolaev who has been despatched to gain leverage over Crawford. Griffin and Emma are forced to give up the crucial evidence and compromise in order to save themselves.
Fearing that all will be revealed and his life ruined, Sinclair commits suicide. A powerless Jason Crawford now faces a bleak future as a puppet of Yuri Nikolaev.
A month later, Griffin and Emma’s lives have returned to some form of normality. Emma has helped Griffin move on from his daughter’s death and he in turn has provided a much-needed father figure. Only time will tell if investigator and reporter will work together again.
